Alicia y el Gato de Cheshire

"Alicia y el Gato de Cheshire" (2012) es el primer dibujo perteneciente a mi nueva serie titulada "Un viaje por el País de las Maravillas", la cual está inspirada en uno de mis libros favoritos: "Alicia en el País de las Maravillas", publicado en 1865 por el matemático y escritor británico Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, mundialmente conocido bajo el seudónimo de Lewis Carroll.

El dibujo nos presenta a una Alicia poco convencional, ya que su apariencia difiere en muchos aspectos con la del libro y las ilustraciones creadas especialmente para la edición por el gran ilustrador John Tenniel. En esta versión, Alicia posee una larguísima y ondulada cabellera negra —en contraposición al cabello rubio que todos conocemos—, un vestido más ceñido y corto, medias con rayas en zigzag y confortables botas de cordones. Del mismo modo, le he otorgado al sonriente Gato de Cheshire un aspecto más personal y estilizado, mezcla entre serpiente y ardilla, con un cuello alargado y flexible como la trompa de un elefante, ojos abultados, un pelaje lleno de destellos y una tupida cola que termina formando una espiral.

No obstante, me imagino que se estarán preguntando qué representa exactamente la escena. Bueno, es sabido que el peculiar Gato de Cheshire puede hacerse invisible a voluntad, y que sus conversaciones pueden llegar a ser un tanto desconcertantes. Y es justamente sobre esto de lo que se trata mi dibujo: el instante preciso en que el Gato de Cheshire está a punto de desaparecer, dejando visible en el aire únicamente su enorme sonrisa. Alicia, perpleja ante el prodigio, se diría a continuación una de las frases más famosas del libro: "¡Vaya! He visto muchísimas veces un gato sin sonrisa, ¡pero una sonrisa sin gato! ¡Es la cosa más rara que he visto en toda mi vida!"

Creo que todos estamos de acuerdo con ella.

"Alice and the Cheshire Cat" (2012) is the first drawing belonging to my new series called "A journey in Wonderland", which was inspired by one of my favorite books: "Alice in Wonderland", published in 1865 by the British mathematician and writer Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, known worldwide as Lewis Carroll.

The drawing presents an unconventional Alice, since her appearance differs in many aspects with the book and the illustrations created especially for the edition by the great illustrator John Tenniel. In this version, Alice has a very long and wavy black hair — opposed to her well known blond hair —, a tightest dress, zigzag leggings and comfortable shoelace boots. Similarly, I’ve given to the grinning Cheshire Cat a more personal and stylish look, mix of snake and squirrel, with a long and flexible neck like an elephant's trunk, bulging eyes, a fur full of sparkles and a bushy tail ended in a spiral.

However, I believe you may be wondering what exactly the scene means. Well, it is known that the peculiar Cheshire Cat may become invisible at will, and that his way to talk can be a little bit disconcerting. And that’s what my drawing represents: the exact moment that the Cheshire Cat is about to disappear, leaving only visible in the air his huge smile. Alice, perplexed by the illusion, said to her later one of the most famous lines of the book: 'Well! I've often seen a cat without a grin, but a grin without a cat! It's the most curious thing I ever saw in my life!'

I think we all agree with her.
