¡Qué les corten la cabeza!

"¡Qué les corten la cabeza!" —o también Alicia y la Reina de Corazones— (2013) es el segundo dibujo de la serie titulada "Un viaje por el País de las Maravillas", la cual está inspirada en uno de mis libros favoritos: "Alicia en el País de las Maravillas", publicado en 1865 por el matemático y escritor británico Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, mundialmente conocido bajo el seudónimo de Lewis Carroll.
El dibujo nos introduce en unas de las escenas más tensas y divertidas de libro: el encuentro de Alicia con la caprichosa e inclemente Reina de Corazones durante el capítulo VIII, titulado "El Croquet de la Reina". En éste aparecen tres jardineros con forma de naipes —llamados Dos, Cinco y Siete— empeñados en pintar de color rojo las rosas que habían sembrado por orden de la Reina en un jardín, pero que por equivocación resultaron ser blancas. Si embargo, mientras Alicia interroga a los acalorados jardineros, aparece de súbito la Reina de Corazones acompañada de su gran séquito real, la cual, al descubrir el error cometido en su rosal, explota en cólera, amenazando con cortarles la cabeza a los tres pobres sirvientes. Por fortuna, Alicia logra intervenir justo a tiempo, salvando a los jardineros tras esconderlos en una gran maceta que había cerca.
Sin duda este es uno de los dibujos más elaborados y divertidos que he hecho, lleno de pequeños detalles como el tocado y el vestido de la Reina, el Valet y la Corona Real, el Castillo de Corazones y las rosas que conforman el jardín. Ahora bien, lo único que espero es la Reina de Corazones no ordene cortarme la cabeza cuando vea su real efigie inmortaliza en mi dibujo…

"Off with their heads!" — or Alice and the Queen of Hearts — (2013) is the second drawing of the series called "A journey in Wonderland", which was inspired by one of my favorite books: "Alice in Wonderland", published in 1865 by the British mathematician and writer Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, known worldwide as Lewis Carroll.
The drawing takes us into one of the most tense and funny scenes of the book: Alice's encounter with the capricious and unforgiving Queen of Hearts, in Chapter VIII "The Queen's Croquet-Ground". In this part, three gardeners shaped like cards — named Two, Five and Seven — are busily painting in red color the roses planted in a garden by order of the Queen, but the flowers turned out to be white by mistake. However, while Alicia interrogates the worried gardeners, suddenly appears the Queen of Hearts with her great royal entourage, who, after discover the error in the rose-trees, explodes with anger, threatening to cut off the heads to the three poor servants. Fortunately, Alicia manages to intervene just in time, saving the gardeners after hiding them in a large flower-pot that stood near.
No doubt this is one of the most elaborate and amusing drawings I've done, full of little details like the headdress and gown of the Queen, the Knave and the Royal Crown, the Castle of Hearts and the roses that flourish within the garden. Now, all I hope is that the Queen of Hearts does not order to cut off my head when she discovers her royal portrait in my drawing...
